This unique project, developed by our Israeli Center of Olympic education together with the Union of sportsmen – new immigrants to Israel provides sport-humanistic education for children and youth. The program has its own original, non-standard methods of teaching, which include principles of fair play. For the first time in Israel, there is a program allowing any kid to realize his or her pursuits simultaneously in sports and in fine arts.
Unfortunately, nowadays, there aren’t opportunities in Israel, where you can see physical culture programs in order to form creativity, aesthetics and other cultural values among children. Almost at all the propaganda of Olympic humanistic ideas doesn’t exist. On the other hand, we witness high level of crime among youth, their increasing involvement in using and selling drugs. Mostly this problem is actual for kids from families with only one parent, families with low income, or families of new immigrates.
The main goal of this project is to introduce ideas of sports in general and Olympics in particular, which are oriented on development of humanistic, moral values in every participant of the lessons. The program implements new teaching methods for children of different age groups. This program will enhance physical and psychological health of children, their intellectual potential. It will help everyone choose a kind of sport and fine arts’ activities that is best for them for the future development.
The implementation of the project will allow changing the current status of lagging in education of Israeli youth (in traditions of Olympic ideals) in comparison with many other developed countries. Also, as it was in ancient times we will unite sport and arts in order to assist hundreds of children with different background to become versatile and harmonically developed persons. Many former Olympic and world champions, living in Israel, have agreed to participate as volunteers to assist us in this project.
Center of Olympic Education was established in January 2004 as noncommercial association, specifically for implementing innovative educational and social programs in the area of sports at various Israeli schools, colleges and other institutions.
Our mission is to contribute to the enlargement of number of people participating in sports’ activities. Special emphasis is given to the development of sport programs for kids, because healthy, harmonistically educated children – are the healthy future of Israel.
We unite specialists, who previously have been working in Israel and abroad and they have vast experience together with modern methodology in the area of sports’ development and education. Among members of our staff and volunteers, who help us in many ways, there are dozens of famous athletes, coaches, well-known public figures.
Our center receives large support from: Wingate Institute, the leading Israeli institution in sport education; world movement “Maccabi”; municipal authorities of cities Bat-Yam, Petah-Tikva, Holon and others. Many sport clubs, professional and amateur sportsmen also cooperate with us. As a result of such partnership, the Center has prepared many programs that can be accumulated by schools, colleges or other types of organizations.
Time span for project is one year starting from January 2006 and completing upon the end of December 2006. The educational program is organized for kids from age 8 up to teenagers of age 17-18. We plan to implement the project in 5 schools in the cities of Bat Yam, Petah-Tikva, Holon, Modiin. The later school is a special institution for difficult children from low income families.
Overall in the project will participate about 40 teachers and our center’s instructors for conducting lessons. About 200-300 students are expected to participate in all stages of this pilot project, while about 1000-2000 children will participate in some certain events and competitions.
The program has 5 types of lessons:
| 1. |
Informative |
| 2. |
Sports – health improving activities |
| 3. |
Fine Arts |
| 4. |
Aesthetics |
| 5. |
Ceremonies, competitions (games of knowledge, quizzes, Olympic sports) |
The program consists of 160 academic hours in the afternoon time for each child a year (4 hours a week for 40 weeks). The lessons will be carried away in classes of no more than 15-20 kids in each. Also, we plan to host 5 seminars for the teachers and instructors, where they will learn more about the methodic and exchange their experience and ideas for further improvement of the program.
During our program the children will participate in contest for best drawing or article on Olympic theme, quizzes for knowing sports, history of arts, history of Israel, etc. Also, we will organize the event of international Olympic day on June 23, 2006. We plan to host so called “Smaller Olympic games” for the participants of the program. This event includes different sport and knowledge games, contests of arts, musical and dance performances of the children). Active participation in preparation to these games is expected from parents of the children. Finally, we plan to have 2 tour trips for the kids: museum of Maccabi with exhibitions of world known Jewish sportsmen and memorial of members of Israeli Olympic delegation tragically killed during Munich Olympics in 1972.
The originality of our program is that for the first time the children in a relatively short period of time can get acquainted with various types of sports (20 types of team and individual sport disciplines), and afterwards to choose more suitable for themselves for practicing in the future. Also, the kids by studying history of arts and culture are able to select a hobby, which will develop their internal culture, intellect, understanding and respect for the culture traditions of Israel and other countries in the world.
During the games and quizzes we inculcate in children such qualities as friendship, fair play, non-ordinary thinking. Therefore, we provide them with a push in their growth as harmonistic personality. After our program, the participants will have higher range of interests, opportunities to continue development of their abilities in sports and arts. In the near future we intend to organize international sport-humanistic events for the children from various countries.
